Summit Academy High School Basketball Fall League 2019 Performance Goals
Goals should be specific, measurable, realistic, and focus on performance, rather than outcomes.
Performance goals are within our control; outcomes are not always within our control. However,
accomplishing performance goals typically lead to successful outcomes.

Performance Goal #1: Win Effective Field Goal Percentage each game.
This is proven to be the most important of the Four Factors.
I would like us to limit the opposition to 42% EFG or lower, and achieve 45% EFG
or higher ourselves. Here’s how we do it:
1. Play solid defense, particularly in transition,
limiting shots in the lane and getting a high hand up on all three point attempts.
2. Shoot a “good shot” every possession.
3. We define a good shot as one that meets the following criteria:

3. We define a good shot as one that meets the following criteria:
- You’re on balance.
- You’re in your range.
- You have time and space to shoot.
- Time and score dictate you shoot the shot.
- A teammate doesn’t have a better shot than you.
Performance Goal #2: Win the Turnover Percentage each game.
Turnover percentage is percentage of possessions that end in a turnover. For example,
if we had ten possessions and two of them ended in a turnover, we’d have a Turnover Percentage
of 20%. I’d like us to have a Turnover Percentage of lower than 20% and our opponents to have
one over 20%.

This does not mean we need to extend our pressure and take more chances and gamble.
Rather, it means the opposite. By staying solid, not cracking defensively, we increase the
likelihood the opposition makes a mistake with the ball.

Offensively, we decrease turnovers by making the simple play. Basketball is a very difficult
game to play. Don’t make it harder by attempting low percentage plays. Let the ball do the work
and take advantage of what the defense gives us.

Performance Goal #3: Win the Offensive Rebound Percentage each game.
This refers to the percentage of available offensive rebounds we garner. For example, if we
miss ten shots and offensive rebound two, we’d have a rate of 20%. I’d like us to limit the opposition
to 10% ORP or lower, and for us to be over 10%.

Again, the more solid we are defensively (meaning, the better we contain the dribble), the easier
it becomes to block out. If we have to scramble, because we’re gambling, lazy, or out of position,
the harder blocking out becomes. Stay solid, rely on your technique (eye check, step up and take
space away from the rim, hit and seal your man), and remember to forget the ball and find your man.
“Hit, then get,” has to be our mantra.

On offense, I am more concerned with not giving up a transition basket than getting a
bunch of offensive rebounds. Cannon, Cody, and Owen have the freedom to chase
offensive rebounds. Everyone else is a safety - when we shoot, recover through the circle,
and get back and secure our defensive basket area.

Performance Goal #4: Win the Free Throw Rate.
This refers to the number of possessions that result in a free throw for us. So, if we have
ten possessions and get to the line twice, we have a FTR of 20%. I’d like to see us up
around 25%, with our opposition below 20%. This requires that we run our offense,
attack the basket, and execute set plays. If we bail the opposition out with bad, quick shots,
we won’t get to the foul line.

Defensively, if we’re solid, if we help aggressively with vision, if we defend with our feet
instead of our hands, and if we take good shots on the offensive end, we can limit the
other team’s free throw attempts.

As far as this league goes, performing well in these four areas is vastly more important
than winning games. However, if we do well in these areas, we will win, and more importantly
we will establish a style of play that will win games when it matters. Your individual goals should
either be rooted in areas of toughness from the Jay Bilas article or something that will directly
help our cause in one of these four areas. After each game, you should go over these four
areas and consider what you did positively and negatively in each area and make mental plan
to improve.
