Utah Camp 2019 Information

I am excited to have our teams play in the Utah Camp. I hope that it's a positive experience for the guys and I am sure we will face some good competition. Here are some things you need to know about it:

1. There is no bus to or from the games; players are responsible for getting themselves to the U. They should be at the game site at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tip off. Plan ahead - parking may be sparse.

2. Players should bring some food and water with them to the games. There is food available for purchase, but it's not the best options for refueling. Players should be in pairs or groups at all times.

3. I'll give each kid a waiver he needs to return to me.

4. Games are mainly in the HYPER and Student Life buildings.

5. From the U regarding parking: "HPER North Parking Lot 24 (North of the Dumke Gymnastics Center), the Central Garage parking structure (northwest of the Huntsman Center), and the LDS Institute Garage are all available for camp parking. Due to NCAA rules, the University is not allowed to reimburse for any parking tickets. If you get a parking ticket, we will not be able to help in
any way. Please communicate this to parents to avoid any possible conflicts."

6. There's a live link for updates on games at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w7U5TFyQKj0WZ_DXZLn8f27r0RacljnyQxC1QMFPNGM/edit#gid=1501751980

7. Saturday's tournament schedule won't be set until around 9 PM on Friday.

8. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday:
-Varsity 2:50 vs Delta at Student Life 3, 3:45 vs Madison at Student Life 3, and 5:45 vs Maple Mountain (JV and Varsity combined) at the Women's Basketball Facility 2.
-JV 5:45 vs Maple Mountain (JV and Varsity combined) in the Women's Basketball Facility 2, 6:40 vs Wendover at the Women's Basketball Facility 1.
-Freshmen/Sophomore: 2:50 vs. Skyridge in HYPER East 101 2, and 5:45 vs. Canyon View at HYPER East 101 1.

Friday:
-Varsity: 6:20 vs North Summit at Student Life 3 and 8:10 vs Cottonwood at Student Life 2.
-JV: 9:30 vs Corner Canyon at Men's Basketball Facility 1 and 1:45 vs. Skyridge in Men's Basketball Facility 2.
-Freshmen/Sophomore: 1:45 vs Delta at HYPER West 106 2 and 7:15 vs Weber at HYPER East 101 2.

Saturday: TBD, but all teams will have at least one game, and I hope more, as it is a single-elimination tournament.

9. Our roster is as follows (I apologize for the size of the youngest team, but the number of available coaches and tournament cost dictate such; my hope is we have four teams for the last tournament we do but that remains to be seen; nevertheless, everyone will play in every game):

As always, if there is an issue or problem, please let me know right away and I'll do what I can to help. Thank you for your time and support. I hope your all the boys are having a great experience playing for Summit Academy. We are proud of the kids and excited to see how we've grown since April!

Thoughts on Jordan Tournament Games 3 and 4 versus Skyline and Cedar Whatever (Hill? Valley? I don't know)

Recognizing there's always things we can, need, should, and we hope, will, do better, I think we should focus on some of the good things we did today and build upon them again tomorrow against Judge and Juan Diego. Some things we did well or better:
1. We won a dang game!
2. We made a (non-banked in) jump shot!
3. We executed set plays well, particularly 11, Mustang, and Circle.
4. We executed well at the end of the half in game 2.
5. We executed the Dribble At action well, especially when running Mustang.
6. We led Skyline for an entire half and controlled the first half in every way.
7. We recovered well went Skyline went on a run and took a lead. We buckled down, executed on both ends, and went on a 20-5 run the last 8 minutes or so to close the game.
8. We had a positive, WE-oriented vibe from guys when they weren't in the game, particularly during the Skyline game.
9. We beat Skyline while not playing perfect - we missed some easy shots, had some poor turnovers, made some defensive mistakes, gave up some offensive rebounds.
10. We got to the basket and forced the officials to make some decisions and got to the line.
11. We recovered defensively pretty well.
Let's make sure we repeat these things at an even more efficient rate the rest of this week. A great goal for us would be to end the week winning two of our final three. That would be a great springboard going into a month or so of practice before we play at Utah.

Statistical Analysis of Jordan League Games 1 and 2 vs. Stansbury and Jordan

In our first game, we lost the turnover battle 7-12 and the offensive rebound battle 12-4. Offensive rebounds killed us in the first half when 6 of their 9 baskets came on offensive rebounds. Aside from that, I felt our defense was good, forcing misses, but we were unable to finish the possession. They were 18/41 overall (43%), and just 5/22 from 3. Defensively, that should be good enough to win, particularly because we only gave up one made 3 in the second half and no offensive rebounds.

However, we were only 36% from the floor and 0/10 from 3. The flip side to that is we were above 50% from 2 (12/23) because we got out and ran, executed set plays reasonably well, and attacked the basket. We seemed to get away from shooting inside-out 3s (off either paint catches or penetration) and instead shot them off slot-to-wing passes, which is going to yield in a more difficult shot.

In our second game, against Jordan, we did a great job limiting our turnovers (only six) and getting offensive rebounds (nine, on 38 misses, which means we offensive rebounded 25% of our missed shots; we did have two offensive rebound baskets). Unfortunately, we were only 1/17 from 3 (under 6%), and only 24% over all (12/50, meaning we were 11/33, or 33% from 2).  We got seven early offensive attempts, but only converted three of them. We need to increase both.

Defensively, we forced 10 turnovers, but gave up 13 offensive rebounds (on 34 misses, meaning they offensive rebounded almost 40% of their misses). This negated a pretty good defensive job on our part - they only shot 32% overall (16/50) and were only 30% from 3. Defensively, aside from the high number of offensive rebounds, these numbers are good enough to win games.

Our problem was, clearly, our inability to make a shot. So why did we struggle? For one, we played hurried, which I think is indicative of the number of airballs we shot. We also played too much with the dribble, often missing an open passing window because the ball was bouncing.  We need to space the floor better, getting wider at the wings and deeper in the slot. Most importantly, even with a 30 second shot clock, we need to get to a third side on ball reversal. This will get the defense out of position so that we can then use the dribble to attack or get something easy out of one of our four main actions: pass and cut, dribble at, jet cut, or post slide.

Tonight we will focus on executing our set plays more precisely so that we can generate easier shots, and playing with more patience and poise in the half court. Like Coach Chamness said after the game, all of our work is cumulative and will eventually pay dividends. Approach practice with a positive attitude and let's take another step forward tonight.

Initial Statistical Analysis of Spring League Games 3 and 4 vs Skyline and Kearns

Against Skyline we shot 21/45, almost 47%, which should be good enough for us to win any game. We were 40% from 3 (6/15), which again, should be a win for us every time, particularly because we held Skyline to 33% shooting (18/54). Even when you account for them shooting 37% from 3 (13/35), I'd argue we still should have won the game.

The issue is they not only got up 9 more shots than us, but they got up 54 overall. That tells me three things: We didn't screen off and rebound well enough (a team that is not bigger nor more athletic than us won the offensive rebound game 8-3 against us, with one offensive rebound basket); we turned it over too much (we lost the turnover battle 12-8); and more importantly, we didn't play with the kind of patience that we exhibit when we play our best. The line between good early offense and bad rushed offense was crossed too many times.

Getting to the line only 8 times also hurt us. Watching the film, you can see that often we tried to attack a set defense rather than one that has been made to move, scramble, shift. If we can get three sides, we can get the defense out of position, and probably get fouled more often, allowing us to set our defense and even press.

Unless we call a set play or have an unbelievably good shot in early offense, we need guys to wait until their second or even third touch before making a play in the half court. Trust each other to share the ball.

Against Kearns we only shot 37.5% (21/52), and only 21.5% from 3 (3/14). That's not great, obviously, but we won with worse numbers a few times last year. We missed numerous plays at the rim, which can partly be attributed to fatigue, but they were also playing their second game and finished at a higher rate, so that's no excuse. We did a better job of executing our actions out of Open (resulting in most of our half-court scores) and got to the foul line more (15/19), but didn't get into transition enough.

They were 21/52 from the floor, including 8/20 from 3 (both 40%). However, they got three offensive rebound baskets to our one (and got eight to our seven overall), and won the turnover battle 13-8. While we did get to the line more than them, they were 11/11, and had three transition hoops against us.

In all, from a defensive standpoint, there's a lot to focus on and improve upon. First, we need to be better in transition defensively. We were good against Skyline, but need to be better. Second, we need to do a better job of blocking off - you competed for the ball but at times your positional disadvantage was the difference. Third, we had an inbounds possession defensively in each game that resulted in a basket - we cannot fall asleep on end outs ever again. Lastly, our screen roll defense must improve with a harder, more aggressive switch by both men and better help from the three defenders not involved in the play. These are all things we'll improve in practice this week.

We're proud of the effort and toughness; now we need to execute better and play a little more intelligently. That comes from practice and playing together. I'm excited about the direction we're moving.
