Utah Camp 2019 Information

I am excited to have our teams play in the Utah Camp. I hope that it's a positive experience for the guys and I am sure we will face some good competition. Here are some things you need to know about it:

1. There is no bus to or from the games; players are responsible for getting themselves to the U. They should be at the game site at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tip off. Plan ahead - parking may be sparse.

2. Players should bring some food and water with them to the games. There is food available for purchase, but it's not the best options for refueling. Players should be in pairs or groups at all times.

3. I'll give each kid a waiver he needs to return to me.

4. Games are mainly in the HYPER and Student Life buildings.

5. From the U regarding parking: "HPER North Parking Lot 24 (North of the Dumke Gymnastics Center), the Central Garage parking structure (northwest of the Huntsman Center), and the LDS Institute Garage are all available for camp parking. Due to NCAA rules, the University is not allowed to reimburse for any parking tickets. If you get a parking ticket, we will not be able to help in
any way. Please communicate this to parents to avoid any possible conflicts."

6. There's a live link for updates on games at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w7U5TFyQKj0WZ_DXZLn8f27r0RacljnyQxC1QMFPNGM/edit#gid=1501751980

7. Saturday's tournament schedule won't be set until around 9 PM on Friday.

8. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday:
-Varsity 2:50 vs Delta at Student Life 3, 3:45 vs Madison at Student Life 3, and 5:45 vs Maple Mountain (JV and Varsity combined) at the Women's Basketball Facility 2.
-JV 5:45 vs Maple Mountain (JV and Varsity combined) in the Women's Basketball Facility 2, 6:40 vs Wendover at the Women's Basketball Facility 1.
-Freshmen/Sophomore: 2:50 vs. Skyridge in HYPER East 101 2, and 5:45 vs. Canyon View at HYPER East 101 1.

Friday:

-JV: 9:30 vs Corner Canyon at Men's Basketball Facility 1 and 1:45 vs. Skyridge in Men's Basketball Facility 2.
-Freshmen/Sophomore: 1:45 vs Delta at HYPER West 106 2 and 7:15 vs Weber at HYPER East 101 2.

Saturday: TBD, but all teams will have at least one game, and I hope more, as it is a single-elimination tournament.

9. Our roster is as follows (I apologize for the size of the youngest team, but the number of available coaches and tournament cost dictate such; my hope is we have four teams for the last tournament we do but that remains to be seen; nevertheless, everyone will play in every game):

I hope your all the boys are having a great experience playing for Summit Academy. We are proud of the kids and excited to see how we've grown since April!

Thoughts on Jordan Tournament Games 3 and 4 versus Skyline and Cedar Whatever (Hill? Valley? I don't know)

Recognizing there's always things we can, need, should, and we hope, will, do better, I think we should focus on some of the good things we did today and build upon them again tomorrow against Judge and Juan Diego. Some things we did well or better:
1. We won a dang game!
2. We made a (non-banked in) jump shot!
3. We executed set plays well, particularly 11, Mustang, and Circle.
4. We executed well at the end of the half in game 2.
5. We executed the Dribble At action well, especially when running Mustang.
6. We led Skyline for an entire half and controlled the first half in every way.
7. We recovered well went Skyline went on a run and took a lead. We buckled down, executed on both ends, and went on a 20-5 run the last 8 minutes or so to close the game.
8. We had a positive, WE-oriented vibe from guys when they weren't in the game, particularly during the Skyline game.
9. We beat Skyline while not playing perfect - we missed some easy shots, had some poor turnovers, made some defensive mistakes, gave up some offensive rebounds.
10. We got to the basket and forced the officials to make some decisions and got to the line.
11. We recovered defensively pretty well.
Let's make sure we repeat these things at an even more efficient rate the rest of this week. A great goal for us would be to end the week winning two of our final three. That would be a great springboard going into a month or so of practice before we play at Utah.

Statistical Analysis of Jordan League Games 1 and 2 vs. Stansbury and Jordan

In our first game, we lost the turnover battle 7-12 and the offensive rebound battle 12-4. Offensive rebounds killed us in the first half when 6 of their 9 baskets came on offensive rebounds. Aside from that, I felt our defense was good, forcing misses, but we were unable to finish the possession. They were 18/41 overall (43%), and just 5/22 from 3. Defensively, that should be good enough to win, particularly because we only gave up one made 3 in the second half and no offensive rebounds.

However, we were only 36% from the floor and 0/10 from 3. The flip side to that is we were above 50% from 2 (12/23) because we got out and ran, executed set plays reasonably well, and attacked the basket. We seemed to get away from shooting inside-out 3s (off either paint catches or penetration) and instead shot them off slot-to-wing passes, which is going to yield in a more difficult shot.

In our second game, against Jordan, we did a great job limiting our turnovers (only six) and getting offensive rebounds (nine, on 38 misses, which means we offensive rebounded 25% of our missed shots; we did have two offensive rebound baskets). Unfortunately, we were only 1/17 from 3 (under 6%), and only 24% over all (12/50, meaning we were 11/33, or 33% from 2).  We got seven early offensive attempts, but only converted three of them. We need to increase both.

Defensively, we forced 10 turnovers, but gave up 13 offensive rebounds (on 34 misses, meaning they offensive rebounded almost 40% of their misses). This negated a pretty good defensive job on our part - they only shot 32% overall (16/50) and were only 30% from 3. Defensively, aside from the high number of offensive rebounds, these numbers are good enough to win games.

Our problem was, clearly, our inability to make a shot. So why did we struggle? For one, we played hurried, which I think is indicative of the number of airballs we shot. We also played too much with the dribble, often missing an open passing window because the ball was bouncing.  We need to space the floor better, getting wider at the wings and deeper in the slot. Most importantly, even with a 30 second shot clock, we need to get to a third side on ball reversal. This will get the defense out of position so that we can then use the dribble to attack or get something easy out of one of our four main actions: pass and cut, dribble at, jet cut, or post slide.

Tonight we will focus on executing our set plays more precisely so that we can generate easier shots, and playing with more patience and poise in the half court. Like Coach Chamness said after the game, all of our work is cumulative and will eventually pay dividends. Approach practice with a positive attitude and let's take another step forward tonight.
