I received this email from the UHSAA
Good afternoon:
This email is in follow-up to the message last night regarding UHSAA winter activities. Last night, Governor Herbert released a health order that suspended all UHSAA activities with the exception of practice and games in the high school football state championships. This statewide health order includes the suspension of practices, competitions and tryouts in all UHSAA winter activities through November 23, according to the Governor’s plan. Furthermore, all other extracurricular activities are on hold for the duration of the order. As a reminder, known violations of the Governor’s Health Order could have severe consequences for you and your school.
In response to the Governor’s Health Order and the corresponding UHSAA communication on Sunday evening, here are some FAQ’s that can help answer concerns.
Q1) I am a swimming coach and we have already started competition. Can we continue competing?
A1) No, there is to be no competition except for the activities included in the Governor’s Health Order.
Q2) My drill team is practicing for performances at local gatherings and at our state football games. Can we continue doing that?
A2) No, support groups of all kinds are not going to be included in the UHSAA State Football Championships. All support groups should cease gathering and practicing for such events immediately.
Q3) My school has an athletic period for basketball. Can we conduct tryouts during that period?
A3) No, tryouts may not be conducted. Athletic periods can be used for activities like strength training, study hall or conditioning.
Q4) What can my team do in an athletic period?
A4) All team activities for winter sports are suspended through November 23, per the Governor’s Health Order. Athletic periods can be used for activities like strength training, study hall or conditioning.
Q5) Can my school have an open gym?
A5) No, all schools must cease holding open gyms through November 23, per the Governor’s Health Order.
Q6) Can we practice if we can social distance?
A6) No, the Public Health Order mandated that all extracurricular activities cease through November 23. This includes practices and competitions.
Q7) What will the season look like after this Health Order ends?
A7) The UHSAA staff is working in conjunction with the UHSAA Board-of-Trustees and Executive Committee to determine how the winter sports season will proceed when practice and tryouts resume. More information will be made available at a later date.
Q8) How can we help our student-athletes during this down period, as mandated by the Health Order?
A8) Encourage your student-athletes to take all the recommended precautionary actions, including wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding social gatherings. Additionally, student-athletes should be encouraged to not interact socially outside of their immediate home.
Q9) How does this affect wrestling hydration testing?
A9) Hydration testing will be postponed till at least November 24. More information on the rescheduled hydration dates will be available in the coming weeks.
Q10) How does this affect debate, drama and solo/ensemble?
A10) The only UHSAA fine arts activity in active competition under UHSAA jurisdiction currently is Debate. Debate will cease all UHSAA sanctioned competitions, similar to the other winter activities, for a period of two weeks until November 24. Decisions regarding plays, concerts and other fine-arts performances will be the responsibility of local member schools and districts. Students may continue to attend academic classes that are focused around a UHSAA-sanctioned activity, provided there is no outside competition.
Tryouts Have Been Postponed
Due to the governor's mandate and per UHSAA guidelines, all basketball activity has been postponed for now. I wish I had more information for you or could give you a definitive schedule for the future, but as of now, I cannot. My advice is to continue to work on your game, work on your conditioning, and work on your grades and I will post our plan when one becomes available to me.
